All about Erotic Asphyxiation

Erotic asphyxiation is heightened sexual arousal from smothering or choking (autoerotic if applied to ones self).
The arousal is caused by lack of oxygen to the brain creating a euphoria like a high for some people which is why some people cannot reach climax without the asphyxiation. Some like the feeling of danger during this act, for others it may be about the control the person has over them.
Other words used for this fetish are breath play, asphyxiophilia or hypoxyphilia. Usually erotic asphyxiation is referred to as breath play.
The most common prop used for erotic asphyxiation is a hand, simply choking yourself or another. Other things that are used are collars varying from a soft lined collar to a choke chain type collar (see collars).
In more extreme cases some use a bag over the head which is even more dangerous. Face sitting is another popular choice for those who prefer smothering rather than the choking aspect of breath play. Some even like to use gas masks.
Erotic asphyxiation can be rather addictive as a result from the release, as the blood flows a surge of dopamine, serotonin and endorphins are released causing a spinning exhilaration. The dizzy, light headed feeling from the lack of oxygen is also addictive. This fetish is particularly dangerous if not done correctly (please see advice link for safety information).
